Adults will soon be able to use a less censored version of ChatGPT that allows them to create erotic materials, according to the company’s chief. Sam Altman, chief executive of ChatGPT maker OpenAI, stated on social media platform X on Tuesday that this change will roll out in December as part of the company’s “treat adult users like adults” principle, following the full implementation of age-gating.
This update will offer verified adult users more flexibility and choices regarding how the artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot responds, including the option for it to speak like a friend or use a “ton of emojis.” While the exact nature of the explicit or erotic content is not immediately clear, the company claims it has found a way to maintain platform safety, particularly for users with mental health issues, while granting greater freedom to others. Altman wrote that “Adults that are not at risk of serious harm… should have a great deal of freedom in how they use ChatGPT.”
This move represents an apparent shift from Altman’s earlier position, where he had previously chosen not to include a “sex bot avatar” in his chatbot. OpenAI has recently faced scrutiny over its interactions with young users, leading it to introduce parental controls last month, which allow parents to link their accounts to their children’s profiles and customize the chatbot’s responses.
