Arrests Made in Daring Louvre Jewellery Heist

French authorities have successfully made arrests connected to the recent, high-profile theft of priceless jewellery from the Louvre Museum in Paris, according to a statement from Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau on Sunday. The operation, executed by the police anti-gang brigade, led to multiple detentions late Saturday evening. One of the suspects was apprehended right before boarding a flight to Algeria at Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport around 10 p.m. Saturday, while a second individual was arrested shortly thereafter in the Paris region. Both suspects are reportedly in their 30s, originate from the Seine-Saint-Denis area, and were previously known to French police. They have been placed in police custody under suspicion of organised theft and criminal conspiracy.
The arrests follow the sensational incident that forced the closure of the world-renowned museum a week ago. On October 19, a group of intruders carried out a lightning-fast heist in broad daylight, stealing eight pieces of jewellery in a meticulously planned four-minute operation that drew international attention. Prosecutor Beccuau addressed the media, confirming the arrests but declining to specify the exact number of individuals taken into custody. She also took the opportunity to condemn the premature leak of information regarding the operation, expressing concern that it could impede the ongoing efforts of investigators to both recover the stolen jewels and successfully apprehend all individuals involved in the audacious crime.
