Historic Cinema Europa Revived by Netflix for Italy’s Oldest Film School

The historic Cinema Europa in Rome, closed since the Covid pandemic, is set to be reborn as a new educational and cultural space for Europe’s oldest film school, the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia (CSC), thanks to a major partnership with Netflix.
Netflix, celebrating 10 years of streaming in Italy, is sponsoring the five-year project with a €4 million investment towards the renovation and management of the venue. The initiative was launched today by Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos and CSC president Gabriella Buontempo, and has been welcomed by Italy’s culture minister, Alessandro Giuli.
The Cinema Europa, located in the Porta Pia area, is a significant site in Italian cinema history, having hosted the first public screening of an Italian film, La presa di Roma, 120 years ago.
The refurbished cinema is due to open in late 2026 and will be dedicated to the National Film Archive. It will become the CSC’s first movie theatre within the city walls and will serve as a hub for promoting cinema, hosting film projects by CSC students, and featuring collaborative film education and cultural initiatives with the streaming giant.
