BLACKPINK’s Jennie, a celebrated solo K-pop artist, marked Hangeul Day by releasing a new Korean typeface called Zen Serif, aiming to highlight the beauty of the Korean alphabet.
Her label, OA Entertainment, announced the launch of the font on Thursday, coinciding with Hangeul Day, the national holiday that commemorates the creation of the Korean writing system.
Zen Serif combines traditional Korean aesthetics with contemporary design sensibilities. According to OA Entertainment, the font was created with the hope that more people worldwide would find Hangeul both practical and visually appealing.
The typeface features minimal ornamentation and incorporates soft curves, reflecting OA Entertainment’s focus on detail. It achieves a distinctive and harmonious look by blending elements of the calligraphic black letter style with the elegance of Hangeul. In a collaboration with Meta, OA Entertainment made Zen Serif the first-ever Korean font available in Edits, Instagram’s short-form video editing app. Starting on Hangeul Day, users globally can freely apply the new typeface to their video content.
”The Zen Serif font represents the identity of Jennie and OA Entertainment and [aims] to share the beauty of Hangeul with the world. Its release on Hangeul Day makes the project all the more meaningful,” OA Entertainment said in a statement.
Jennie has consistently showcased her passion for Korean culture in her music, including the tracks “Zen” and “Seoul City” from her first solo album. As the honorary tourism ambassador for Seoul, she continues to promote the city and Korean culture through various projects, such as the “Absolutely in Seoul” campaign.
